- Site safety meetings every two weeks
- Corporate safety meeting every month (in which trends or recurring safety issues are discussed and monitored)
It is common knowledge that construction is one of the more dangerous occupations. ITC has the enviable record of having one of the most comprehensive Occupational Health and Environmental Safety Programs of any major construction company in Western Canada. Our company is leading edge and effective in ensuring that all workers on our sites make it through the workday safely.
A good illustration of ITC’s safety record, is Workers’ Compensation Board of British Columbia claims statistics for the last five years (4.0 claims per 100 person-years of labour, versus an industry average of 7.0, or 43% below the industry average). Correspondingly, we have been rewarded for WCB’s low cost of injuries with a 24.1% discount from the Base Premium Rate charged against assessable payroll for the current year.
From the executive level to the workers that are the foundation of our company, safety is participated in and improved upon continually at ITC. To fill the need for better and safer work, we have spearheaded the creation of new tools, systems and safe work procedures to aid the construction industry and our Fall Protection Program and Worker Orientation and Training Program has been studied and utilized by the construction safety industry.
Our Corporate Safety Policy Statement
“The fundamental objective of ITC’s Safety Program is to minimize and eliminate accidents and injuries which result in suffering and hardship to employees. In order to achieve optimal safety performance, all employees must fulfill their individual responsibility to work safely for their families, their fellow workers and for themselves.
The Management of ITC is committed to providing a safe, productive work environment for all employees. It is the responsibility of Superintendents and Foremen to ensure that their employees are trained in and follow proper work procedures in order to obtain optimal output without accidents or industrial disease. They are also accountable for ensuring that employees are aware of and follow Company Safety Policy and WCB Occupational Health and Safety Regulation.
It is the responsibility of every employee to follow safe work procedures and to become familiar with and observe safety regulations in order to prevent accidents to themselves and their fellow employees, and loss of equipment and property."
This policy is reinforced with twice daily complete safety inspections, and rewards (shirts, mugs, hats, gift certificates, etc.) to employees whose suggestions help improve site safety.
